Daphne Not exactly, but I aspire to work in the medical field. Perhaps, it's because my aunt has always inspired me as a successful surgeon. She's been performing operations for a long time and she's been able to save many lives, but she says she still has a lot to do. Her ambition is to save as many lives as possible and inspire people to build a healthier society. She also keeps encouraging me. She's always done good things. She's never been the black sheep of the family. The whole family are proud of her. Tom Amazing! You seem to be determined to join her. Daphne That's for sure. I want it very much, but I wonder whether it suits my skills. Tom We all need to think about our interests, strengths, and weaknesses before we decide on our career paths, and think of the answers to certain questions. Daphne Like what? Tom First, knowledge of the skills for the job. What does this job require? Convincing people, focus, sleeplessness, a perfect memory, tolerance, patience, physical strength, collaboration, digital skills, technical skills and so on. Then, which of these have I got? What am I good at? What do I need to improve? If I make an effort, will I be able to improve these skills? How will I be able to gain enough knowledge and get better? Daphne That's right. I'm trying to do that too. Being a surgeon requires working well with your hands, attention to details, um, knowledge of biology and medicine, probably working under pressure, uh, thinking and reasoning skills, I guess. Tom Great! Which of those do you think you've got? Daphne Well, at school, I'm good at science already. I've been reading articles and books on science. I've read tens of them. I've learnt a lot. For now, I'm able to pay attention to details, but I know it needs improving. I've been helping Dad with the household repairs. It helps him and improves my attention skills at the same time. Tom That's incredible! I can't believe you're committed to achieving your goal! I can see that you put in a lot of energy and time. What else do you do? Daphne Well, I do all of these because I enjoy working towards my goal. And as I said, in order to improve my attention skills, I also avoid overusing smart devices. I believe I'll be able to improve the other skills in time. Tom You've got the passion, the desire, everything you need. I'm sure you will. Daphne I do hope so, Tom. What about you? What's your ambition? Are you inspired by anyone? Tom I am. My brother inspires me. He's got a degree in engineering. He's just graduated with the necessary qualifications in engineering, and now, he's able to design complex structures. He's always been successful. I think this is because he's always been interested in designing things. Also, he's always been good at problem-solving, which is very important in engineering. Daphne That's one of my dreams. Improving problem-solving skills, I mean. How was he able to improve that? Were you able to notice anything special?
