So-called Disgusting
Although we think some animals are reallydisgusting justbecause of theirappearances, they are in fact the providers of the cycle of nature. They all have different roles in nature to protect the ecosystem.
i “Waiter, there is a fly in my soup!” is a common expression of an extremely unpleasant situation. Although we generally think that flies are disgusting animals, there are interesting facts about them. Flies feed on dead animals and they recycle them back to the earth. Flies also provide a food source for other animals such as frogs, spiders and lizards.
5 I think, I wouldn’t kiss a frog even for the promise of a handsome prince. However, frogs are quite beneficial to the environment because they eat insects and protect crops. They maintain ecological balance because they serve as an important link of food chain. They enable farming for us by keeping the insect population in check.
Many people think that earthworms are only used as fish bait. İn fact, they are very 10 important for agriculture. They enrich soil by creating tunnels. By these tunnels, the soil can get enough air and moisture easily. İn addition to this, they eat organic matters such as leaves in the soil. Plants cannot use these organic matters directly. After organic matter is digested, the earthworms release waste from their bodies called ‘castings’. Castings contain many nutrients necessary enough for the plant to grow. Some people use castings as natural fertilizers. 15 * 19
15 Although Mickey Mouse has always been really cute for everybody, in real life one of them
is enough to make people jump on a chair. We think that mice are too little. İn fact, they do a
job big enough to protect human health. Humans have many similar genes with mice. Scientists
have learned a lot from mice in order to find cures for many diseases. More than 77% of
19 research animals are rats and mice.
