Kıvanç’s Project: Different but Equal

Kıvanç is a 13-year-old student with Asperger’s Syndrome. He sees the world differently, and sometimes he struggles in group activities. He prefers quiet spaces and gets distracted when there is too much noise. However, his attention to detail and deep thinking are appreciated by his teachers.At school, his classmates are encouraged to understand different learning needs. The guidance counsellor has had several awareness posters designed to help students support each other. “Diversity is a strength,” says one poster that is being displayed on every classroom wall.Last month, the class was asked to prepare a group project about “Empathy in Daily Life.” At first, Kıvanç didn’t want to join. But his teacher had a classmate invite him personally and had the classroom environment adjusted to be more comfortable for him.Slowly, Kıvanç started to participate. His idea was to create a visual chart showing the different ways people express feelings. “Shall we add real-life examples?” he suggested. His team liked the idea and supported him. With their help, he prepared a stunning presentation.Now, his project is being shared as a model in other classes. Kıvanç says, “I learnt that differences can bring people together, not push them apart.” Thanks to the project, mutual respect, empathy, and motivation are being cultivated in the classroom.
