They offered their former residents both a unique design and a special way of life.Courtyards were at the centre ofthis life. Families were using these spaces for cooking, resting, and spending time together during the day. Courtyards were also important for social life. These open areas connected family life with the community and let neighbours meet and talk. Social life in villages, however, was not limited to houses; village squares also brought people together and helped create strong neighbourhood bonds.However, in the 1950s, industrialisation transformed both village and city life, and many families left their villages for better jobs in urban areas. Cities were growing quickly, and neighbourhoods were becoming crowded at that time. People began to live in apartment blocks instead of traditional houses. As modern life spread to villages, new buildings replaced old houses, and cafes tookthe place of village squares. As a result, villages began to lose their old charm and identity.To protect traditional village life and architecture, Türkiye started the Identification and Dissemination of Local Texture and Architectural Features in Rural Areas Project in 2014. It aims to keep village life alive, encourage the use of traditional materials, and support the development of village mansion, house, and fountain projects that reflect local architectural styles.
