1 Memories of School Life and Friends2 Life Before Modern City Living3 My Journey from Town to City4 The Benefits of Living in a Big City

I grew up in a small town. İt was a lively place with various shops, and almost everyone knew each other very well. The butcher was the father of my best friend, and next to his shop, there was a bakery. İn the mornings, we could smellfresh bread while we were walking to school. That smell still reminds me of home and happiness. There was also a pharmacy on the corner. Of all the places, the pharmacy was the most interesting one for me. The pharmacist was afriend of my mother, and we often visited her. She had a small laboratoryfull ofglass bottles and liquids that I did not recognise. I was watching her with interest while she was carefully mixing different substances to prepare medicines such as burn creams and lotions. Since there was not a wide variety of medicines in those years, like we have today, all the mums in the neighbourhood were using those creams when we had a minor cut or burn. There werefamiliarfaces everywhere in the neighbourhood, and this made the areafeel sfrfor bothfamilies and children. For instance, while ourfamilies were preparing dinner at home, we were playing outside safely until it dark.

| I had manyfriends my age, and we were all at the same primary school. We were going to school together with laughter and great excitement, and on some days one of our parents was walking with us. İn 1970, we moved to the city when I started upper secondary school. City life was differentfrom life in our town, but I quickly adapted to it. Our new home was a smallflat near the railway station; however, trains were primarilyfor long-distance journeys, not for urban transport. Most people were using buses while they were going to work or school, and veryfew families had cars in those years. Since buses were crowded in the mornings, my father wanted me to have another option and bought me a bike when I turned 15. I could not believe my eyes when I saw that beautful thing! While I was cycling to school, I dreamt about travelling long distances with it. Looking back, those moments mean a lot to me.
