İMECE is Türkiye's first high-resolution Earth observation satellite. Turkish engineers at TÜBİTAK UZAY (Space Technologies Research Institute) and TUA (Turkish Space Agency) designed and built the satellite. They also produced a space- compatible electro-optical camera for the first time in Türkiye to meet the country's civilian and military high-resolution imagery needs.They launched İMECE into space on 15 April 2023 and received its first test image on 29 April 2023. It now orbits the Earth at a height of about 680 kilometres at the same time as the Sun, which allows it to take pictures of the same area under similar lighting conditions. It can capture very detailed images of objects even smaller than one metre. These images are useful for many important purposes such as environmental protection, agriculture, disaster management, urban planning, and national security. The images also help train new scientists and engineers for future space projects.The project is a major step because it shows the country's ability to produce advanced space technology without depending on other nations. Türkiye can now not only use its own satellite imagery but also develop and export space technologies like electro-optical cameras. Thanks to İMECE, Türkiye has joined the group of countries that can design, build, and operate their own observation satellites.
