Soru: a) Read the text quickly and circle the best title.

1 How to Become an Astronaut2 The Dangers of Space Exploration3 The Human Body in Space

Soru: b) Read the text quickly again and circle the topic that is not mentioned in the text.

1 Physical effects of weak gravity on the human body2 Diets that are suitable for space missions3 Possible future solutions to space-related problems4 Daily training and exercise for astronauts

People often look at the night sky and dream of space travel. Visiting Mars or the Moon sounds like a fantastic adventure, but life in orbit is difficult for humans. Space conditions, especially weak gravity, affect the body in weird ways.As a result, space agencies prepare astronauts step by step for a safe journey. On the Earth, gravity pulls blood down to the legs, but this is not the case in space. If gravity is weak, fluids float up to the head. This gives astronauts red and puffy faces, and they sometimes feel sick. A person's height also changes outside the Earth. This is because gravity pushes down on the spine, but in space, the spine relaxes and stretches. If someone spends time in space, they grow up to five centimetres taller. But this environment is dangerous for the body. If muscles do not work against gravity, they get very weak. For this reason, the crew have to exercise on special machines for two hours every day, both when they are preparing on the Earth and when they are working in space.Fortunately, scientists are working on solutions for these challenges. They believe that future technology is the key. For example, if engineers develop artificial gravity, astronauts will not lose their muscle strength. This technology will create a force like the Earth's gravity inside the spacecraft, and the body will be able to function normally. Adaptation is another interesting possibility for the far future. If humans build colonies on or near other planets, our bodies might adapt to lower gravity over generations. This will take time for sure, but it will be a huge step for humanity. If we solve these biological puzzles, we will be able to travel further into the universe safely.

Soru: c) Work in pairs. Think of the answers to the questions below. Ask and answer them.

1 Why is life in orbit difficult for humans?2 Why does someone become taller in space?3 How can the crew keep their muscles strong?4 What is one possible solution for muscle loss in space?

Soru: d) Work in groups. Read and examine the examples below.

e.g. If bones do not feel gravity's pull, they lose strength and density. If you pass all the tests, you will join a special training programme. If a crew works together as a team, their mission can be successful.

Soru: e) Find and underline the sentences in the text as in the examples in Exercise

Soru: f) Watch Digital Story 8. Find and write similar sentences to those in Exercise
