Each country has its own unique foods, from small snacks eaten between meals to a big main course as the largest part of a meal. Sometimes a tasty starter, such as a hot soup before the main course, may have an incredible flavour. The cooking style of the food can also reflect the climatic, cultural, and traditional features of a community. For example, many Mediterranean countries, such as Türkiye and Italy, often enjoy grilled dishes. Outdoor fire-based cooking is a healthy way to cook fish and meat. In colder countries like Russia, people usually eat fried foods that they cook in hot oil. It helps keep them warm and full during long winters. In European countries, baked food is popular because ovens have been part of home cooking for centuries.
Culture also influences food preferences. In many Asian countries, including India and Thailand, it is common to find vegetarian or vegan dishes because of religious traditions. People generally prefer dishes without meat or any animal products. In the Middle East and some parts of Africa, people prefer halal food because it follows their cultural and religious rules. Some countries also traditionally prefer sugar-free food. For example, the Japanese often use red bean paste instead of refined sugar in some traditional sweets. Croatia, people enjoy black risotto with cuttlefish ink that gives it a dark colour. In Switzerland, cheese fondue is popular. The Swiss melt cheese and serve it with bread cubes in a pot. In Czechia, many people love gulas, a stew made with paprika. In Portugal, pasteis de nata are crispy desserts. In addition, many families in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus eat hellim, a kind of traditional cheese, for breakfast and şeftali kebab, which is a kind of meatball, for lunch or dinner.
